This enormous tree reaches up to 60 meters in height, with an impressive cylindrical and uniform trunk. Its large, flat fruits have various winged seeds. When mature, the fruits open and free the seeds to fly in the wind, allowing them to disperse. The wood is excellent for general construction; on the Osa Peninsula it has been illegally harvested for its wood. It can be found in the humid, shoreline forests from Mexico to Colombia; in Costa Rica it is common on the Pacific coast, throughout the northern region, and at the Osa Conservation Biological Station where it is abundant near the beach.
Este árbol enorme de hasta 60 metros de alto, impresionante por su fuste cilíndrico y muy regular. Sus frutos son grandes, aplanados y por dentro tienen varias semillas aladas, cuando éstos maduran se secan, se abren solos y liberan las semillas al viento, permitiéndoles dispersarse. Su madera es excelente para construcción general, en la Península de Osa ha sido ilegalmente cortada por su madera. Se puede encontrar en bosques húmedos de bajura desde México a Colombia, en Costa Rica se conoce en pacífico central, sur y zona norte, en la estación Biológica Piro es abundante cerca de la playa.
