Little Breadnut

This tree, called little breadnut tree, is so named due to its resemblance to the breadnut tree (Brosimum alicastrum). This species reaches up to 30 meters tall. Its orange colored fruits are eaten by local fauna. Its lightweight wood can be used in light construction and mold-making. The sap is used as a natural remedy for the flu and cough. It is distributed from Mexico to Brazil and Bolivia. In Costa Rica it is widely found along both the Pacific and Atlantic slopes. 

Historia de la planta

Este árbol llamado Ojochillo (Brosimum lactescens)  debido a su similitud y parentesco con el ojoche (Brosimum alicastrum), llega hasta 30 metros de alto, sus frutos son anaranjados y son consumidos por la fauna local. Su madera es color claro liviana y puede ser usada para construcción liviana, formaletas. Su savia es usada en otros países como remedio para resfriados y tos crónica. Se conoce desde México hasta Brasil y Bolivia, en Costa Rica es amplia en ambas vertientes.
