This tree reaches up to 25 meters and is not popularly known. Its white flowers are pollinated by bees, while its mid-sized fruits ripen to yellowish and are likely consumed by mammals or large birds. Its wood has been used for fence posts, however it is not widely used as it is brittle and not highly durable. Medicinally, it has been used to treat blistering, as a stomach tonic, diuretic, caustic, and in cases of tumors, rheumatism, dysentery and fever. It inhabits dry to humid forests and is distributed from Mexico to northern Argentina. In Costa Rica, it grows commonly throughout both the Atlantic and Pacific slopes.
