Plant Story

This palm is the American sister of the famous African oil palm, which is widely used and cultivated to make palm oil. This American version prefers periodically flooded sites, and its fruits are rich in oils and desired by animals such as peccaries. The species is used medicinally, to produce oil, and its leaves are used in construction. Distributed from Honduras to Brazil, in Costa Rica this species grows throughout the Pacific Coast and Baja Talamanca.

Esta palma es la hermana americana de la famosa palma aceitera africana, la cual es ampliamente usada y cultivada para elaborar el aceite de palma. Esta palma prefiere los sitios inundados periódicamente, sus frutos son ricos en aceites y son apetecidos por animales como los sahínos o chanchos de monte. Entre sus usos están la producción local de aceites, medicina, construcción con las hojas. Se conoce desde Honduras hasta Brasil, en Costa Rica principalmente en la Costa Pacífica y Baja Talamanca.
