This species lives in mature forests, with humid to very humid climates. It is known from Mexico to Ecuador and in Costa Rica it has been found in both slopes.

El árbol de ocora (Guarea bullata) pertenece a la familia del cedro y del caoba (Meliaceae), el género al que pertenece (Guarea) es muy particular por sus hojas con crecimiento indefinido. Esta especie es diferente por sus hojas abolladas y con pelos pardos. El tamaño de esta especie es sumamente variable y puede alcanzar la madurez desde 1.5 hasta 35 metros de alto. Sus flores son pequeñas, atraen insectos, los frutos son cápsulas rojizas, que se abren al maduran y dejan expuestas sus semillas de testa rojiza. Esta especie habita en bosques maduros, con climas húmedos a muy húmedos. Se conoce desde México hasta Ecuador y en Costa Rica se ha encontrado en ambas vertientes.
