Plant Story

This species is a medium to small tree, it has a very interesting phenomenon called cauliflory, which is that the flowers and fruits are produced on the trunk or thick branches of the tree. The flowers are white, pollinated by insects, the fruits are yellowish and when they are sufficiently ripe, they open by themselves, exposing their seeds through an edible covering for animals called aril. It is endemic and only known from the south pacific of Costa Rica.

Esta especie es un árbol de porte mediano o pequeño, tiene un fenómeno muy interesante llamado caulifloría, que es que las flores y frutos se producen en el tronco o ramas gruesas del árbol. Las flores son blancas, polinizadas por insectos, los frutos son amarillentos y cuando están lo suficientemente maduros, se abren solos, exponiendo sus semillas por una cubierta comestible por animales llamada arilo. Es endémica y solo se conoce del pacífico sur de Costa Rica.
