Plant Story

The avocado tree is the best known and most used member of the Lauraceae family. Its flowers are small, yellowish, and pollinated by insects. Its fruits are large and contain a green, pasty pulp, which is consumed by many animals and edible to humans. This species is widely cultivated across the tropics because of the flavor of its fruits, growing in humid, low elevation or cloud forests. Though its natural origin is still not understood, it is native to Mexico and Central America; in Costa Rica, it is considered native throughout some regions, including part of the Osa Peninsula.

El árbol del aguacate, es el más conocido y utilizado de su familia Lauraceae, sus flores son pequeñas, amarillentas, son polinizadas por insectos, los frutos son de tamaño grande, de pulpa verde, pastosa, consumida por muchos animales. Esta especie es ampliamente cultivada en los trópicos del mundo por sus frutos comestibles y de muy buen sabor. Crece en bosques húmedos y muy húmedos de bajura o en bosques nubosos, su origen natural es algo confuso, es nativo de México y Centroamérica, en Costa Rica se conocen algunas localidades donde se describe como nativo, entre ellas algunos sectores de la Península de Osa.
