This shrub belongs to the most diverse genus of Costa Rican flora. Its flowers bloom in erect, yellowish spikes. It is abundant in disturbed areas, so it could be a good component for the restoration of degraded systems. The species is endemic to Costa Rica, where it has been recorded along the entire Pacific coast.
