Plant Story

This tree reaches up to 25 or 30 meters high. Its dark brown trunk can shed plates, and the whole plant has an aromatic resin. Its whitish flowers attract insects such as bees, and its fruits are reddish capsules that open and release their seeds, which are surrounded by a white pulp. It grows in mature, humid forests and  is known from Belize to Brazil; in Costa Rica it grows widely across both the Atlantic and Pacific slopes.

 

Historia de la planta

El canfín (Protium stevensonii) es un árbol de hasta 25 a 30 metros de alto, el tronco es pardo oscuro, a veces exfoliando en placas, toda la planta tiene resina bastante aromática. Las flores son blancuzcas, atraen insectos como abejas, los frutos son cápsulas rojizas, que se abren y liberan a sus semillas, envueltas por una pulpa blanca. Crece en bosques maduros de clima húmedo a muy húmedo, se conoce desde Belice hasta Brasil, en Costa Rica es amplia en ambas vertientes.
