Historia de la planta

El árbol de guayaba (Psidium guajava) es sumamente conocido por sus frutos comestibles, dulces, usados para refrescos, jaleas, postres, entre otros. Esta especie es de porte pequeño, cultivado en casi todo el país, debido a esta razón su origen exacto es desconocido, pero se cree que se encuentra como nativa y cultivada en el país. Las flores son blancas, grandes, visitadas por varias especies de insectos, los frutos son verdes a amarillentos, de sabor dulce, consumidos por bastantes animales, entre ellos aves, mamíferos arbóreos, murciélagos, además las hojas tienen propiedades medicinales. Crece en áreas intervenidas, bosques secundarios, charrales, en climas secos a pluviales, en zonas bajas y altas. Se conoce como cultivada en casi todos los trópicos del mundo.
