This striking tree belongs to the bean family (Fabaceae), it can grow up to 45 m high, its common name “sangrillo” is due to its reddish sap. The flowers are yellow, with a violet spot in the centre, which helps to identify the species instantly. The fruits dry when ripe and form a kind of wing around the seed, which allows them to be dispersed by the wind. This species is known from Costa Rica and Brazil.

Este llamativo árbol pertenece a la familia del frijol (Fabaceae), llega a crecer hasta 45 m de altura, su nombre común sangrillo se debe a que posee savia rojiza. Las flores son amarillas, con una mancha violeta en el centro, lo cual ayuda a identificar a la especie al instante, los frutos al madurar se secan y forman un tipo de ala circundante a la semilla, lo que le permite ser dispersados por el viento. Esta especie se conoce en Costa Rica y Brasil.
