When ripe, its fruits are reddish or purple and are thought to be consumed by birds and arboreal mammals. This tree grows in the understory, specifically in mature forests. It is distributed from Belize to Panama; in Costa Rica it has been recorded on both the Atlantic and Pacific slopes.
