This small tree, growing only 5 meters high, is distinguished due to its trunk and branchlettes, which are armed with strong thorns, generally in groups of four. Its white flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds, bees, and other insects. Its medium-sized fruits ripen to a yellowish color, and the pulp is quite dark. Its wood is used for firewood. This species grows in humid forests with seasonal climates, and has been recorded from Mexico, to the south of Brazil; in Costa Rica it grows along the Pacific slope.
Es un árbol de porte pequeño, de hasta 5 metros de alto, es bien característico por que su tronco y ramitas están armadas con fuertes espinas, generalmente agrupadas en 4. Sus flores son blancas, son visitadas por colibríes, abejas y otros insectos, los frutos son medianos, maduran amarillento, la pulpa es bastante oscura. Su madera ha sido usada para leña. Crece en bosques húmedos, con climas estacionales, se lo conoce desde México, hasta el sur de Brasil, en Costa Rica principalmente de la vertiente pacífica.
