This cedar is an especially interesting tree. Reaching up to 40 meters, its bark is dark gray with striations and its trunk is cylindrical without buttresses. Its flowers are green, and its fruits become reddish when ripe. Inside the fruit, the seeds are covered in a way that resembles snails, hence its common name “Little Snail Cedar.” Its wood is used for construction. The tree grows in humid, low elevation forests and is distributed from Costa Rica to Peru; in Costa Rica it is known in the North Zone, the Central Pacific and the Southern regions.
El cedro caracolito (Ruptiliocarpon caracolito) es un árbol sumamente interesante, mide hasta 40 metros de alto, la corteza es color gris oscuro con estrías, el tronco es cilíndrico, sin contrafuertes. Las flores son verdes, los frutos son rojizos al madurar y por dentro las semilla tiene una cobertura parecida a un caracolito, de ahí su nombre común. La madera ha sido usada para construcción general. Crece en bosques muy húmedos de bajura, se conoce desde Costa Rica hasta Perú, en Costa Rica se conoce en Zona Norte, pacífico central y sur.
