Las flores son amarillentas, los frutos son morados, consumidos por aves. La madera ha sido usada para construcción liviana, las semillas poseen aceites y pueden ser empleados para elaboración de jabones, cosméticos, lubricantes y otros. Crece en bosques secundarios de bosques húmedos a muy húmedos, se conoce desde México hasta Bolivia y Brasil.
