This shrub reaches just 4 meters and is easily recognized by its fruits, which are similar to those of commercial papaya. Its flowers are white and its fruits are yellowish-green. It is an edible fruit consumed by our ancestors and is even cultivated. Its resistance to diseases that also attack varieties of the commercial papaya has recently been studied. It is distributed from southern Mexico to the northern nations of South America; in Costa Rica it grows between 0 to 1150 meters above sea level in the Tilarán mountain range and the central and south Pacific.
Esta especie es de tipo arbustivo alcanza hasta 4 m de altura, se reconoce fácilmente con frutos ya que son muy similares a los de la papaya (Carica papaya). Sus flores son blancas y sus frutos son de color verde- amarillento. Ha sido utilizada por nuestros antepasados, se cosechaba de los bosques e incluso era cultivada; recientemente es objeto de estudio por su resistencia a enfermedades que atacan también a la papaya comercial (Carica papaya). Se distribuye desde el sur de México hasta Venezuela, en Costa Rica se puede encontrar en elevaciones de 0 a 1150 metros, en cordillera de Tilarán y Pacífico central y sur.
