This cedar is closely related to two other cedars, C. brasiliense y C. longifolium, although is considered either as a bush or a small tree reaching between 2 and 8 meters tall. Originally from Africa, this species has been brought all the way to the South Pacific Islands. It was introduced in the tropical Americas as an ornamental species, but it is now considered an invasive species as it has been spreading into native forests. It is common to find self-planted individuals along the edges of beaches in Costa Rica.
Esta especie, muy aliada a los cedros maría (C. brasiliense y C. longifolium) se da ya sea como un arbusto o árbol pequeño, donde alcanza tamaños de 2 a 8 metros de alto. Es originaria de África, hasta las Islas del Pacífico Sur, en América tropical ha sido introducida como ornamental, sin embargo se ha ido escapando al bosque nativo, por lo que ya se considera una especie invasora. Es común encontrarla de esta forma escapada a orillas de la playa en Costa Rica.
