Es nativa de Mesoamérica, donde se pueden encontrar poblaciones nativas de la especie, las cuales tienen frutos esféricos, medianos (hasta 7 cm). Ha sido ampliamente cultivada en otras regiones tropicales y se ha modificado al punto que sus frutos son mucho más grandes y voluminosos que los nativos, que llegan hasta 60 cm de largo.
