This tree is highly variable in terms of its size as some individuals barely reach 5 meters while others up to 30 meters. It can grow in a wide range of ecosystems, including deciduous forests, humid jungles, and mangroves. On the Osa Peninsula it can reach large sizes, making it easy to confuse with other species. It can be found from Mexico to Venezuela, although in Costa Rica it mainly grows in low-elevation regions. When ripe, the fruits turn orange in color.

Este árbol es bien variable con respecto a su tamaño, ya que puede alcanzar una altura de 5 hasta 30 metros de alto y crece en variedad de ecosistemas que van desde el bosque deciduo hasta el bosque muy húmedo y manglares, aquí en la Península de Osa en Costa Rica, llega a tener grandes tamaños, que lo hacen confundirse con otras especies. Se puede encontrar desde México hasta Venezuela, en Costa Rica está ampliamente distribuida en las zonas bajas. Sus frutos maduran anaranjados.
