This species is distributed from Costa Rica to Colombia; in Costa Rica, it grows along both the Pacific and Atlantic slopes.

Este árbol puede crecer desde 2.5 a 25 metros de altura, suele encontrarse en bosques maduros o primarios, en zonas húmedas a muy húmedas. Sus flores son blancas, posiblemente polinizadas por insectos, los frutos son esféricos, verdes y luego morados cuando maduran, sostenidos por una cúpula roja. Estos frutos son consumidos por aves principalmente. Esta especie se conoce desde Costa Rica, hasta Colombia. En Costa Rica en ambas vertientes.
