This species reaches 15 meters and mainly grows in humid primary forests at low elevations. It is distributed from just southern Costa Rica to Panama. Its white flowers are striking, and its green fruits are cylindrical with six peculiar winged edges.

Gustavia brachycarpa es un árbol de 15 metros de alto, que crece más que todo en bosques primarios de zonas bajas y húmedas, donde se conoce únicamente desde el Sur de Costa Rica a Panamá. Las flores son blancas, vistosas, mientras que los frutos son verdes, cilíndricos, con 6 bordes alados bastante peculiares.
