This small tree generally grows just 4 to 8 meters high. Its leaves are mid-sized with a serrated edge, and the trunk is ribbed in texture, light-colored, and scaly. The tree’s yellow flowers are pollinated by insects like bees, and its green fruits grow several spherical seeds which are released once mature. This species is common among the understory and generally grows in flat areas associated with floodplains and riparian forests. It is known from Honduras to Colombia and grows across the Atlantic and Pacific sides of Costa Rica.
Esta especie es un árbol pequeño, que crece de los 4 a 8 metros de alto generalmente, las hojas son medianas, con borde aserrado, el tronco es muy irregular, acanalado, de tonalidades claras, escamoso. Las flores son amarillentas, son visitadas por insectos como las abejas, los frutos son verdes, poseen varias semillas esféricas, las cuales son liberadas al este madurar. Esta especie es típica de sotobosque, generalmente crece en zonas de terreno plano o asociadas a zonas de inundación y bosques riparios, se conoce desde Honduras hasta Colombia, en Costa Rica crece ampliamente en ambas vertientes.
