This tree belongs to the mango family (Anacardiaceae) and has an aromatic resin which smells of mango. The tree is small and its branches grow near the very top. Its flowers are white and probably pollinated by insects, while its drupe fruits range from yellow to red and are consumed by a large number of animals including birds, arboreal mammals, bats, peccaries and more. Its fruits are edible for humans and are widely cultivated throughout Costa Rica and used as a living fence. The species is not native to Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. It has been recorded from Mexico to Brazil and the Carribean; in Costa Rica, it grows throughout the country.
El árbol de jocote (Spondias purpurea) pertenece a la familia del mango (Anacardiaceae), posee resina aromática con olor a mango, de porte pequeño y muy ramificado. Las flores son blancas, probablemente polinizadas por insectos, los frutos son amarillos a rojos, del tipo drupa y son consumidos por gran cantidad de animales, desde aves, mamíferos arbóreos, murciélagos, saínos, entre otros. Estos frutos son comestibles para el ser humano, por lo que es ampliamente cultivada en casi todo el país, sin embargo no es nativo de la Península de Osa, además se usa mucho como cerca viva. Se conoce desde México hasta Brasil y las Antillas, en Costa Rica en prácticamente en todo el país.
