It is distributed from Mexico to the northern region of South America; in Costa Rica it grows across the central and southern Pacific regions between 0 and 900 meters above sea level.
Este árbol es de la familia de los guácimos (Malvaceae), alcanza de 10 a 20 m de altura. Se caracteriza por encontrarse en áreas alteradas o bosques secundarios. Sus flores son rosadas y son visitadas por abejas, mariposas y otros insectos. Sus frutos son pequeños de hasta 2 centímetros, color marrón, los cuales se abren y dejan expuestas las semillas que son dispersadas por el viento. Es utilizado para leña y construcción de cajones, además se considera que mejora las condiciones edáficas por lo que es apta para recuperación de áreas degradadas. Se distribuye de México hasta Perú, en Costa Rica en el Pacífico central y sur entre 0 y 900 metros de elevación.
